The basic SIN of Adam and Eve was distrust, unbelief, or lack of faith concerning what God said. “Whatever is not of faith/trust is sin” (Romans 15:23b). This naturally led to explicit transgression of God’s directive. The result was death via the withdrawal of the fruit of the Tree of Life. Consequently, all of their descendants die as well.
Therefore, in order to restore the human race to life, faith/trust had to be created in human hearts. The giving of life via the Tree of Life without the condition of faith in God would only lead to long-lived corruption, sin, and evil, since unbelief concerning God’s explanations leads to disobedience and transgression of His directions for life, wholesomeness, blessing, and productivity.
Accordingly, the Gospel Story is perfectly designed to generate trust in God again, which justifies Him in giving the Holy Spirit of life. [5/27/10]
