On the mistaken premise that Jesus “IDENTIFIED WITH our SIN” it is quite understandable that this might seem to explain and, conversely, be explained by, a conjectured “display of God’s WRATH at the cross of Christ” in favor of the penal satisfaction theory of the atonement, along with its necessary substitutionary mechanism. But the thin gossamer (regardless of its historic durability) dissolves before sound exegesis. Jesus fully identified only with our suffering of sin’s consequent EVILS, and he did so nobly, heroically, lovingly, and ultimately self-sacrificially to the supreme degree. Yet because he was ever sinless throughout life, all such sufferings were, in the final analysis, wrong, for they were undeserved. Therefore, God finally gave him what he justly deserved for treasuring up such graciousness (adapting Romans 2:1-5-13).
